The demonstrators carried photographs of their family members, people they knew and heroes which participated in the World War II through the streets of the Spanish capital to the central Plaza Mayor.
"We are celebrating and remembering the Great Victory, a great celebration for all Russian and European people. We want to remember it because in recent times there have been those who are beginning to forget what May 9 [celebrated as the Victory Day in former Soviet republics] means, to change history and take away the importance of the Soviet people in this victory against fascism," Vera Rodionova, a spokeswoman for Moscow-based Essence of Time international organization which took part in organizing the event, said.
This year, commemorative marches are held in the United States, Canada, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Switzerland, Estonia, Latvia, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, and many other countries.
