WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The CDC has warned Americans against traveling to more than 30 countries as the Zika virus due to the danger of infection.
"Local mosquito transmission of Zika virus infection (Zika) has been reported in Saint Barthelemy," the warning stated. "Because Zika virus is primarily spread by mosquitoes, CDC recommends that travelers to Saint Barthelemy protect themselves from mosquito bites."
The current Zika virus outbreak started in Brazil in the spring of 2015 and has since spread across Latin America, the Caribbean and parts of the United States. Cases have been also reported in several European countries and Asia.
In December 2015, Puerto Rico became the first US territory to report a local transmission of the Zika virus, which has been associated with several health conditions, including a temporary paralysis known as Guillain-Barre syndrome.
