The United States is looking at additional ways to ensure full implementation of the ceasefire in Syria, US Secretary of State John Kerry said on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US State Secretary John Kerry discussed in a phone call on Tuesday additional efforts to ensure sustainable ceasefire and political process in war-torn Syria.

"The key is going to be enforcement [of the ceasefire in Syria]," Kerry stated in an interview with CNN. "We are looking at other methods of enforcement beyond that, but we are not there yet, but we are building what I hope will be a stronger structure."

The cessation of hostilities, negotiated with the help of the United States and Russia, has been in place in parts of Syria since late February. A new truce was hammered out on April 29 for Damascus and the northern Latakia province.

Kerry said the parties are building on the experience of the first agreement, and currently have a different enforcement mechanism.

Earlier on Tuesday, the US Department of State said Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will discuss reaffirming the nationwide ceasefire in Syria during an upcoming International Syrian Support Group (ISSG) meeting in Vienna, scheduled for May 17.
