WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Department of State is waiting to respond to a letter from Congress seeking additional sanctions on Iran related to the delivery of the Russian S-300 missile defense system, State Department spokesman Elizabeth Trudeau said in a press briefing on Tuesday.
"I am not going to get ahead of those sanctions discussions now," Trudeau stated when asked about the Obama administration's support for sanctions on Iran.
The United States continues to oppose the Russian sale of the S-300 air defense system as "destabilizing" to the region, but it does not violate the Iran nuclear agreement or existing UN Security Council sanctions, Trudeau explained.
