KIEV (Sputnik) — According to the petition, once Crimea becomes part of Ukraine again, the canal could be used for fast sea links between the Azov and the Black seas.
"It is necessary to make every effort to tighten the blockade of the occupied territory. Namely, to fence the Crimean Peninsula off from the mainland with an artificial canal across the isthmus. The peninsula will thus become an island, inflicting a lot of problems on the occupying authorities," the petition reads.
The Ukrainian authorities do not recognize the results of the March 2014 referendum after which Crimea reunified with Russia and consider it an Ukrainian territory. Over 95 percent of the Crimean population who participated in the referendum voted in favor of reuniting with Russia.
