UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — In his report "In safety and dignity: addressing large movements of refugees and migrants," Ban reiterated that individual countries were unable to solve the refugee issues on their own and that international cooperation must be strengthened.
"Despite bold efforts, responses to the large movements of refugees and migrants – which will continue or possibly increase due to such issues as conflict, poverty and disasters – have been largely inadequate, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said today in a new report, calling for the adoption of a global compact on responsibility-sharing that collectively ensures the human rights, safety and dignity of all refugees and migrants," the statement published on Monday reads.
The secretary-general urged the UN member states to address the root causes of the movements, while protecting people en route and at borders, prevent discrimination and promote inclusion.
The UN chief stressed that the upcoming UN General Assembly high-level meeting on large movements of refugees and migrants, scheduled to take place on September 19, would be a "unique opportunity" for world leaders to agree on new approaches to address the issue.
