The brawl began during school lunch, as reported by KNBC-TV. At least 40 black and Hispanic students took part in a spontaneous melee, even kicking those on the ground.
It is not known what the reason for the fight was, but some students told reporters that it could have been the result of racial insults.
It took as many as 12 police officers to bring the group under control, as once the fight was pulled apart, another began nearby.
In an email to parents, school Principal James Lee said that "disciplinary action" had been taken regarding several students who were involved in the fight. He added that the students' parents had been notified.
"We want to reassure parents that the safety of all students and staff remains our top priority," Supt. Michelle King said in a statement.
