Yemen has dissolved into instability and violence since September 2014 when Houthi Shia rebels supported by army units loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Saleh rose against the government and seized large territories including the capital of Sana’a.
In March 2015, a Saudi-led coalition launched an air strike campaign against the Houthis. A number of attempts to establish a UN-brokered ceasefire in Yemen have so far failed.
