April Break of Ceasefire in Syria 'Catastrophe' for Humanitarian Work

The disruption of ceasefire in Syria was a catastrophe for humanitarian work in the country, an adviser to the UN Special Envoy for Syria said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The disruption of the ceasefire regime in Syria in April did a great damage to the humanitarian work in the country, the humanitarian adviser to the UN Special Envoy for Syria said Thursday.

"The breakdown of cessation of hostilities was a catastrophe for humanitarian work. April was terrible for humanitarian work… Some places became calmer [since then], some hotter," Jan Egeland told journalists.

Syria has been mired in civil war since March 2011, with government forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad fighting numerous opposition factions and extremist groups.

The ceasefire in Syria, worked out by Russia and the United States, took effect on February 27 to facilitate humanitarian access to all besieged areas in the country, among other purposes.
