WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The announcement came after the White House announced this week that later in May Barack Obama would become the first sitting US president to visit Hiroshima, the first city and civilian target in the world to be destroyed by an atomic weapon nearly 71 years ago.
"The annual meeting is one of several exchanges held by the United States and Japan each year to strengthen bilateral cooperation to address the threat posed by the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery," the note stated.
In the Tokyo talks, "Interagency experts from both sides met to discuss a range of non-proliferation and counter-proliferation challenges and how [both] countries can best cooperate to address those challenges."
The Tokyo talks also focused on promoting effective and robust enforcement by third countries of UN Security Council Resolution 2270 concerning North Korea, the media note said.
Both sides agreed to meet in Tokyo again for another round of discussions next year, the note added.
