Americans should practice enhanced precautions while traveling to Grenada due to the spread of the Zika virus in the country, the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced in a statement on Thursday.
WASHINGTON, May 12 (Sputnik) — Americans should practice enhanced precautions while traveling to Grenada due to the spread of the Zika virus in the country, the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced in a statement on Thursday.
"Local mosquito transmission of Zika virus infection (Zika) has been reported in Grenada," the warning stated. "CDC recommends that travelers to Grenada protect themselves from mosquito bites."
The US health agency has warned Americans against traveling to more than 30 countries as the Zika virus has been linked to brain defects in newborn babies.
The current Zika virus outbreak started in Brazil in the spring of 2015 and has since spread across Latin America, the Caribbean and the United States. Cases have also been reported in several European countries and Asia.
In December 2015, Puerto Rico became the first US territory to report local transmission of the Zika virus, which has been associated with several health conditions, like a temporary paralysis known as Guillain-Barre syndrome.
