TALLINN (Sputnik) — The president cited German Chancellor Angela Merkel as the type of leader Europe needs, stressing that decisions taken under pressure of public opinion were not leadership but simply attempts to stay in office.
"It took political will and leadership to create a new settlement, the post-Cold War settlement, [which] required political will on the part of a number of European leaders, who were willing to stake their political reputations… At this point we are facing a lot of short-termism…" Ilves told Lennart Meri Conference.
Lennart Meri Conference is being held in the Estonian capital of Tallinn from May 13 to May 15.
