SULAYMANIYAH (Iraq), (Sputnik) – According to the Kurdish ANF news agency, clashes between the Kurdish Civil Protection Units (YPS) and Turkish servicemen erupted in five regions on Saturday night. The militants attacked the local police department and police barracks.
Two YPS fighters were killed in the clashes. According to the media outlet, the fighting is still taking place.
Tensions between Ankara and the Kurds escalated in July 2015 as fighting between the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the Turkish army resumed. Ankara has imposed several round-the-clock curfews in Kurdish-populated towns, preventing civilians from fleeing the regions where the military operations are underway.
