WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – Trump all but secured his path to the Republican nomination at the party convention in July after his victory in the Indiana primaries on May 3.
"The world is more interconnected than ever before, and it’s becoming more connected every day. Building walls won’t change that," Obama told graduates.
Trump took a strong stance on immigration as soon as he entered the presidential campaign with plans to deport 11 million illegal immigrants living in the United States and build a wall on the border with Mexico to stop their flow.
"The point is, to help ourselves, we’ve got to help others, not pull up the drawbridge and try to keep the world out," Obama stressed.
Addressing the real estate mogul and reality television star’s campaign slogan to "Make America Great Again," the outgoing president urged the graduates to take stated longings for "the good old days" "with a grain of salt."
"We live in a great nation and we are rightly proud of our history… But I guess it’s part of human nature, especially in times of change and uncertainty, to want to look backwards and long for some imaginary past when everything worked, and the economy hummed, and every politician was wise, and every child was well-mannered, and America pretty much did whatever it wanted around the world. Guess what? It ain’t so. The good old days weren’t all that good," Obama said.
