Poland’s six former defense ministers urged incumbent Antoni Macierewicz to step down over his criticism of the previous government in an open letter published by local media Sunday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The current defense minister has come under fire for inflammatory comments since assuming his post last November, including for suggesting that a 2010 plane crash that killed Poland’s ex-president was terrorism and for entertaining the possibility of a Jewish conspiracy of global domination.

"Even the most intense political struggle cannot take place at the cost of Poland’s wellbeing," the letter signed by Janusz Onyszkiewicz, Bogdan Klich, Janusz Zemke, Tomasz Siemoniak, Radoslaw Sikorski and Bronislaw Komorowski and published by the Wyborcza daily said.

The six argued that Macierewicz’s comments this week accusing the 2007-2015 coalition government of, among other things, failing to allocate 1.95 percent of national GDP on defense, "easily discredit[s] the potential of the Polish Army."

"For this reason, we express our firm opposition to such methods and such conduct. We also believe that Antoni Macierewicz should no longer exercise the office of minister of national defense," the signatories wrote.
