KIEV (Sputnik) — The decommunization bill was signed into law by Poroshenko in May 2015. The legislation prohibited Communism and Nazism propaganda, stipulating renaming towns and streets named after Soviet statesmen.
"We must complete decommunization, because it is a matter of national security," Poroshenko said at Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Political Repressions event in Kiev.
The president added that many Ukrainian cities and villages had already been renamed and many Soviet monuments demolished but there still were thousands of monuments and some 300 settlements awaiting decommunization. He stressed that the locals had to get enough time to pick new names, which would meet the government's expectations.
