India-US Forge Closer Ties in First Maritime Security Dialogue

India and the United States continue to cultivate cooperation in strategic maritime defense, the US Embassy in India said in a statement after the first Maritime Security Dialogue on Monday.

NEW DELHI (Sputnik) – On April 12, Washington and New Delhi agreed to strengthen cooperation in Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean maritime security during the US defense chief’s three-day visit to India. The areas of joint work included navy-to-navy discussions on submarine safety and anti-submarine warfare, as well as holding bilateral Maritime Security Dialogue.

"The creation of this dialogue was agreed to during Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter’s recent visit to India and is a further sign of the growing relations between our two countries," US Ambassador to India Richard Verma said.

The sides discussed Asia-Pacific maritime challenges, naval cooperation, and multilateral engagement, the statement said.

The United States was represented by Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs David Shear, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Manpreet Anand, and Vice Admiral Joseph Aucoin, Commander, US Seventh Fleet. India was represented by officials from the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Defense.
