MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Global Debout protests stem from the French Nuit Debout social movement, which opposes labor reforms in the country that would make it easier for French employers to fire their workers, as well as from the rallies organized in Spain by the protest movement "Indignados" in 2011.

The first Nuit Debout protests took place in Paris on March 31, spreading out across the country since then. The French activists have been joined by supporters from many countries, including Spain, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Italy.

According to a statement published on the Nuit Debout movement's official website, some 250 French cities as well as 130 towns in other countries joined the call to hold Global Debout rallies on Sunday and to "occupy public spaces worldwide, to gather together, express themselves and take back politics into their hands."

The most prominent "Global Debout" protests took place in Madrid, Paris, Geneva, London, Rome and Glasgow.
