MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Tuesday, Dutton, asked what he thought of a proposal to increase Australia’s refugee intake, said that illiterate and innumerate migrants would either be taking Australian jobs or be a huge cost to the country’s budget.
"Peter Dutton is pointing out the very real cost involved in issuing humanitarian and refugee visas. Often the people who come to Australia on these visas come from very troubled backgrounds…there is an extraordinarily high cost in ensuring they can be a contributing member of society," Bishop told the Sky News television channel.
Australia detains refugees who come to the country to seek asylum on the islands of Manus in Papua New Guinea and Nauru, a practice which has been criticized by rights groups for leaving refugees living in inhumane conditions. The country’s refugee intake stands at around 13,700.
