"The Ministry… is complying with each and every one of the requirements of the Extradition Treaty between the United Mexican States and the United States of America," the statement read.
The statement noted that Guzman is will be prosecuted in two different US district courts in Texas and California on charges of organized crime, possession of weapons, money laundering as well as a number of drug offenses.
Mexico had said earlier it would not extradite Guzman until he served his time for crimes in that country, but he escaped from a maximum security prison in Altiplano in July of 2015. Mexican authorities recaptured Guzman on January 8.
Guzman is leader of the Sinaloa Cartel and has been designated as the most powerful drug trafficker in the world by the US Treasury Department.
From 2009 to 2011 Forbes magazine ranked Guzman as one of the most powerful people in the world with a net worth of $1 billion.
