By implanting the chip into her arm Ribas has forced herself to maintain an ongoing dialogue with the planet, trying to express what the planet feels in her dance. When an earthquake occurs she feels its magnitude with the power of the vibration.
The ballerina started to apply this technology in her dance even during training at School for New Dance Development in Amsterdam. As a dancer herself, the chip, located in her elbow, is constantly in motion and it corresponds to the vibration of the tremors, even when the ballerina is not dancing.
The ballerina is also the founder of the Cyborg Foundation, whose main task is to protect the rights of cyborgs and extend help to the people who have decided to become cyborgs.
Sputnik talked to Moon Ribas, to learn how to be a cyborg in the modern world and how she sees the future of our planet.
“I consider myself a cyborg, because my body has been introduced to cybernetics and I feel one with it not only physically, but also psychologically. I have a new sense of unity created by cybernetics and the human body.”
Ribas further said, “I'm still getting used to that feeling of constant vibration, even at night. If somewhere there is a major earthquake, I will wake up. When the earthquake affects people's lives, I get a strange feeling, because my new sense connects me not only to the planet, but also to other people.”
“For example, when the earthquake happened in Nepal, I had a feeling that I am there because I felt the tremors. Though, at the same time, I was very far from there. It was a bit of a strange feeling. Now I do not just know that the planet is a living organism, but I can feel it too.”
“We have yet to learn how to live on our planet,” the ballerina added.
Ribas explained that she feels the tremors like she feels the rhythm of her own heart. That is why, in order to express her feelings and to share them, she creates then through a different, external work which is dance. She also plays the percussions, paints and sculpts.
Talking about whether it is important to put in a chip into the body in order to expand her feelings, Ribas said, “Yes, for us, it is just a physical sensation, that is only a consequence. Much more important is to expand one’s consciousness, deepen feelings and understand more. I think it's very important to have a chip in the body, because it's so much easier to develop these feelings.”
She noted that she thinks that gradually more and more people will want to implant a chip into their bodies to expand their consciousness and develop further.
“I think that my generation and older generations have a bias, which is represented, in science fiction movies as well, suggesting that the union between people and technology will not lead to anything good. We will decide what this union should be like. Depending on what we do, this alliance will allow us to increasingly feel our oneness with nature, with other animals and to better understand the environment in which we live,” Ribas concluded.
