UK Defense Ministry Rejects Reports on London's Support for Pan-EU Army
17:07 GMT 22.05.2016 (Updated: 13:46 GMT 05.08.2022) The UK Defense Ministry rejected on Sunday media reports on alleged London's plans to support an EU Army, according to a statement published on the ministry's website.
LONDON (Sputnik) — Earlier in the week, British media reported that EU military drills underway in the United Kingdom could be a move toward the establishment of an EU Army.
"Claims in the reports that it could be a step towards an EU Army are wrong. The Government has repeatedly made clear that the UK would never be part of an EU Army and that we would use our veto to block any move towards one," the statement read.
According to the statement, the UK government is against any measures which "would undermine member states’ military forces."
The current drills are "a routine exercise" previously held in the United Kingdom in 2008, 2010 and 2013.
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker suggested in March 2015 that the European Union should create its own unified army to respond to threats posed to both EU member states and neighboring countries.
