WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The BRICS countries comprise more than one third of the world’s population and account for more than 20 percent of global GDP.
"I think that we are less driven by the fact that they are a member of the BRICS, and more driven by kind of what the potential is for enhancing the US-South Africa relationship or the US-India relationship," Liser stated on the sidelines of the fourth annual Doing Business With the BRICS conference in Washington, DC on Monday.
Liser observed that the United States is monitoring the work of the BRICS and knows about the activities of the association.
"I think that we are aware that South Africa is the ‘S’ in BRICS and we are aware of some of the things that they are doing like they talked about the bank that they've established and so forth."
Liser noted that she does not think "BRICS membership drives what we do with these countries."
The United States is very aware, she added, "that the BRICS are working together in various ways, and sort of watching what they do."
