Mourad Laachraoui, the younger brother of one of the terrorists who blew themselves up in Brussels airport has become European taekwondo champion in the under-54 kg weight class and is set to participate in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Murad's weight category is not included in the competition program, but the 21-year-old athlete is listed among Belgium's 185-strong Olympics team and will compete in the under-58kg category, Deutsche Welle reported.
The athlete's elder brother was Najim Laashraui who along with another suicide bomber carried out a terrorist attack in the Brussels airport on March 22, killing 32 people and injuring 300 more. According to investigators, Laashraui was also associated with the November 13 terrorist attacks in Paris which claimed lives of 130 people.
At a press conference two days after the terrorist attacks in Brussels Murad said that his older brother was an intelligent young man, and the family had no idea about his radicalization until he left for Syria in 2013, breaking all contacts with his relatives.
"You don't choose your family," the young man said during a press conference a few days after the Brussels terrorist attack took place.
