Obama Administration Set to Move 22 Guantanamo Bay Inmates Elsewhere
10:54 GMT 24.05.2016 (Updated: 10:58 GMT 06.08.2022) Two dozen Guantanamo Bay detainees could be transferred to several foreign states by the end of July, as this move was approved by the White House, according to media reports.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The White House is set to transfer over two dozen Guantanamo Bay detainees to several foreign states by the end of July, media reported, citing an unnamed government official.
According to the Guardian, 22 or 23 detainees due to be transferred have been officially approved for the procedure through an internal review process or quasi-parole hearings.
There are currently 80 men detained at Guantanamo. The United States transferred nine detainees to Saudi Arabia in April and ten to Oman earlier this year.
In 2009, Obama pledged to close the notorious Cuba-based detention center amid mounting concerns about human rights abuses committed by US personnel against detainees.
