YALTA (Crimea) (Sputnik) – Russian researchers are close to complete the testing of pilot samples of medication that could potentially be very effective in therapy for the Zika virus, Health Minister Veronica Skvortsova said Tuesday.
"The testing of new medicines against Zika, developed by our researchers, is close to completion, and we are hoping to have positive results," Skortsova told reporters.
The minister emphasized that a natural Zika outbreak in Russia is impossible, but unique cases may be registered in patients returning from overseas travel.
The Zika virus is spread by the Aedes mosquito and is almost non-hazardous for adult people but can be dangerous for pregnant women as their babies may be born with neurological disorders, including microcephaly.
