ANKARA (Sputnik) – As the presidential office is de jure a ceremonial title with limited executive powers, the Turkish opposition has accused President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of actively intervening in national governance.
"The president who was elected with 21 million votes is politically responsible to the people. He accepts the responsibility, it's not an intervention," Yildirim told legislators from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).
Erdogan seeks to hold a referendum to abandon the parliamentary system established in Turkey by the 1923 Constitution in favor of an executive presidency.
Yildirim was elected the new Turkish prime minister at the AKP snap conference on Sunday, after his predecessor Ahmed Davutoglu resigned. Erdogan has approved a new Cabinet headed by Yildirim.
