BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – The European Union will spend over 10 billion euros ($11 billion) in 2015-2016 to solve the current migrant crisis, First Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans said Wednesday.
"In 2015-2016 the EU will have devoted more than 10 billion euros to manage the crisis," Timmermans said at the European Union.
Europe has been beset by a massive refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants fleeing their crisis-torn countries of origin in the Middle East and North Africa to escape violence and poverty. More than 1.8 million migrants entered the European Union in 2015, according to the EU border agency Frontex.
