"Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Robert McDonald’s recent remarks show a fundamental lack of respect for the veterans he’s been tasked to serve," Cruz stated. "[A]s a result, he should resign.
On Monday, McDonald compared waiting for healthcare coverage from the VA to waiting in line for a ride at Disneyland. The remarks led to wide-spread condemnation from lawmakers.
Cruz noted in the statement that deep corruption exists in the VA, and the comments made by McDonald show he is not the right person to uncover the corruption and ensure "our heroes receive the care that they earned."
Problems with waiting times at the VA came into focus after a media report in April of 2014 found that 40 veterans died while waiting for doctor’s appointments. Many veterans were reportedly placed on a secret waiting list, which differed from another list shared with officials in Washington, DC.
