MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Leaders of the Scottish Parliament support the United Kingdom's remaining in the European Union, Scottish Cabinet Secretary for Europe and External Affairs Fiona Hyslop said Thursday.
During a debate at the Scottish Parliament, Hyslop noted that "all the parties represented in this chamber" have leaders who are in favor of EU membership.
On June 23, residents of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, will vote for or against the United Kingdom remaining in the European Union.
Hyslop noted that the Scottish government's position on the issue was clear — "being in the EU is far better for the people of Scotland than being out."
However, she noted that the European Union was not perfect and it needed to improve to ensure it is focused on issues important to the people, such as jobs, the economy, security and the environment.
Brexit supporters argue that EU membership has eroded the country’s independence to legislate, direct its economy and control its borders. Opponents warn that leaving the European Union could deeply harm the United Kingdom's economy.
