MOSCOW (Sputnik) — He added that Germany has moral authority to help the intra-Syrian talks make progress, as Berlin has good relations with Moscow and Washington, international mediators of the peace process.
"There are three countries that can play a significant role [in the Syrian settlement process], the UK, France and Germany and of the three I think … Germany [is] a good candidate to play that role on behalf of the [European Union]," Anas Abdah told The Wall Street Journal.
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad fighting numerous opposition factions and extremist groups.
The latest round of intra-Syrian talks took place in Geneva on April 13-27. The Riyadh-formed High Negotiations Committee walked out of the talks citing the continuous fighting in Syria and the lack of progress on humanitarian issues.
