WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States is running out of time if it wants to curb the spread of the Zika virus because the mosquito season is about to get underway, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Dr. Tom Frieden said in a speech at the National Press Club on Thursday.
"Memorial Day weekend heralds the start of mosquito season in the United States," Frieden stated. "We have a narrow window of opportunity to scale up effective Zika prevention measures and that window of opportunity is closing."
Nearly 300 pregnant women in the United States and its territories are infected with the Zika virus.
The Zika virus does not cause serious complications in adults, but can cause severe brain defects and microcephaly in newborns.
