Vietnamese national Minh Quang Pham was sentenced to 40 years in US prison for conspiring to commit a suicide bombing attack on London’s Heathrow International Airport in 2011, the US Department of Justice said in a statement on Friday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — According to court documents, 33-year-old Pham, who also used the alias Amin, traveled from London to Yemen in 2010 to receive training from al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) leader Anwar al-Awlaki.

"This sentence holds Minh Quang Pham accountable for his terrorist activities, including providing material support to al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and receiving explosives training from Anwar al-Awlaki in Yemen for the purpose of committing an attack in the United Kingdom," Assistant Attorney General John Carlin said.

Al-Awlaki instructed Pham to carry out a suicide terrorist attack inside Heathrow airport, targeting planes arriving from the United States or Israel, the Justice Department said.

When he was arrested at Heathrow airport in 2011, UK authorities found Pham to be in possession of electronic media documenting his time in Yemen and a live round of armor-piercing ammunition.

Pham pleaded guilty in January to providing material support to AQAP, conspiring to receive military training from the terrorist group and to possessing a machine gun "in furtherance of crimes of violence."

Pham will be extradited to the United Kingdom after completing his US prison term, the Justice Department noted.
