WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Since April 10, the World Food Program successfully carried out 44 high-altitude airdrops over Deir-ez-Zor, the release explained.
"These airdrops mean that 762 metric tons of urgently needed food assistance… reached approximately 100,000 people," O’Brien said on Friday.
In addition, Russia announced on Wednesday that a Russian military transport plane airdropped 21 tons of UN supplies to the city.
Obrien noted that the weeks of air drops have brought an amount of food equivalent to one truck convoy. Moreover, he said that airdrops are costly, dangerous and technically challenging.
Deir-ez-Zor is surrounded by the Daesh, is a designated terror group that is outlawed in numerous countries, including in the United States and Russia.
