Democratic congressman Jerrold Nadler of New York is asking presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump to give back the $150,000 he reportedly received from the World Trade Center Business Recovery Grant program.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – On September 11, 2001, almost 3,000 people were killed in al-Qaeda terrorist attacks that destroyed the World Trade Center and damaged the Pentagon.

"Return the funds you received or donate them to a charitable organization dedicated to providing legitimate support for the victims of 9/11," Nadler wrote in an open letter, as quoted by The New York Times on Friday.

According to the congressman, Trump’s property at 40 Wall Street, for which the billionaire received the 9/11 recovery grant funds intended for small business owners, had a $26.8 million in annual revenues at the time.

"Despite the federal definition of a small business as having less than $6 million in revenue, you accepted a $150,000 payout," Nadler said, stressing that Trump prevented small business owners "from taking full advantage of the relief so generously offered by their fellow citizens."

Responding to the congressman, Trump claimed that his property qualified for the grant and helped in post 9/11 relief, although he did not specify how exactly.
