The Syrian opposition High Negotiations Committee (HNC) has not yet elected their new chief representative in the Geneva talks instead of Mohammed Alloush, who had announced a decision to leave his post, HNC spokesman Riyad Naasan Agha said on Monday.

DUBAI (Sputnik) — On Sunday, Alloush announced his resignation over the failure of the UN- backed Geneva peace talks to bring a political settlement in Syria.

"He [Alloush] tendered his resignation from the [HNC} delegation, and his successor has not been elected," Agha said.

Syria's Opposition HNC Chief Negotiator Announces Resignation

A Syrian government delegation, as well as three opposition groups — the Riyadh-formed HNC, the Moscow-Cairo and the Hmeimim groups have been taking part in the UN-mediated Geneva talks.

The latest round of intra-Syrian talks took place in Geneva on April 13-27. The HNC walked out of the negotiations, citing the continuous fighting in Syria and the lack of progress on humanitarian issues.
