Pakistan touched the "water stress line" in 1990 and crossed the "water scarcity line" in 2005, according to the report. If this situation continues, the country will face acute water shortages or drought-like situations by 2025.
To overcome the water crisis, the further research on the possible solutions is required. "Unfortunately, the PCRWR has no funds to ensure sustainable research," an official from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) said.
The PCRWR, which was established under the control of MoST, has recently asked the government to create a PKR 50 million (US $477,000) fund within the PCRWR for the research and development activities, according to the official.
"The funds will help continue and sustain research activities, which are the need of the hour in a country like Pakistan where rising population is decreasing per capita water availability," the MoST official added.
