The 26-year-old woman, who uses the stage name Maggie McMuffin, was en route to Seattle when she was told to change her striped high-waisted shorts and thigh-high socks or be forbidden to board the plane.
“The gate and onboard crew discussed the customer’s clothing and determined that the burlesque shorts may offend other families on the flight,” Doug McGraw, a spokesman for the airline, told Forbes in an email. “The customer agreed and continued on the flight without interruption.”
McMuffin changed and boarded her flight, but took to social media to vent about the incident and vow to never again fly JetBlue, referring to the company as “misogynistic,” again. The airline has since offered to reimburse her for the pants that she had to purchase at the airport, as well as give her a coupon toward a free future flight.
“We support our crewmembers’ discretion to make these difficult decisions,” McGraw said.
Ironically, as some social media users have noted, her shorts, deemed too scandalous to fly, are now being flashed across television screens in airports nationwide after cable news picked up the story.
