UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — Daesh jihadist group, outlawed in a number of countries worldwide, including Russia, launched an offensive in Iraq in June 2014 and took control of large parts of the country.
"Already, in the case of Iraq, we are looking at 3.4 million people, who have been displaced due to the rise of Daesh. What we are talking about in the next couple of months is another 3 million people being displaced," UNAMI Deputy Special Representative Lise Grande told reporters on Tuesday.
In February, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi vowed to eradicate the militants in 2016, stressing that Daesh continued to lose ground in the country.
