MOSCOW, June 1 (Sputnik) – Donald Trump will visit the United Kingdom one day after Brits hold a vote on their future in the European Union, the presumptive presidential nominee for the US Republican Party said Wednesday.
"I look forward to attending the official opening of this great development on 24 June," Sky News quoted Trump as saying in a statement, referring to his Trump Turnberry luxury resort on the western shore of Scotland that underwent $288-million renovations.
Previously, there were suggestions he could travel to London in August for a Republican fundraiser drive.
British Prime Minister David Cameron, who reportedly has no plans to meet Trump during his trip, has repeatedly criticized the outspoken real estate mogul for his views on Mexican immigrants and Muslims. At a G7 Summit in Japan last week, however, Cameron noted he might meet Trump if he visited the United Kingdom before the US elections.
In December 2015, Trump proposed a "total and complete" ban for Muslims entering the United States, as well as a Muslim registry and control of certain mosques. Following the announcement, Cameron called the idea "divisive, stupid and wrong."
A petition to ban Trump from entering the United Kingdom that gathered more than the 100,000 signatures needed for parliamentary review was rejected on the grounds the ban would fuel further media attention for the presumptive nominee and his controversial remarks.
