Over 70 people were injured and around 300 left without shelter after a fire broke out at a refugee detention center on the island of Lesbos, media reported Thursday, citing Save the Children foundation.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Six people were hospitalized during the fire, which occurred after clashes between the center’s residents started late on Wednesday, The Independent newspaper reported.

Hundreds of migrants coming ashore on the Greek islands of Samos, Lesbos and Chios find themselves locked up for months at the so-called hotspots, created as part of the EU-Turkey migrant deal. Under the deal, Turkey pledged to take back all undocumented migrants that crossed into Europe through Turkey.

Last month, the Human Rights Watch issued a report saying that “inhumane” detention conditions in Greek centers processing refugees create a volatile atmosphere that contributes to daily violence.
