Bicycles were given away to poor girls studying in different government schools in Nepal, the Indian Embassy said in an official statement. The program, which was estimated as being worth NRs 13.65 million (US $127,000), was initiated by the Government of India under its Small Development Project scheme to stop poor Nepali girls from dropping out of schools and to enhance literacy. Literacy rates in Nepal are low: the total adult literacy rate in the country in 2008-2012 was 57.4 percent, according to Unicef's site.
Apart from this, India has been providing assistance to various government programs for the improvement of education and health services across Nepal. India has also granted 59 ambulances, 7 buses and one eye care van to four Nepal districts to serve the medical and educational needs of the local people.
