The "regime of silence" in Syria's Darayya will be extended to ensure safe delivery of UN aid to local residents, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — An agreement has been reached to extend the "regime of silence" in the Darayya settlement in Syria’s Damascus from June 3 00:01 local time [June 2 21:01 GMT], the Russian reconciliation center said Thursday.

"The extension of the ‘regime of silence’ from 00:01 June 3, 2016, has been reached in the region of the Darayya settlement upon the initiative of the Russian side to ensure safe delivery of UN aid to civilians residing in Damascus," the center said in a statement as quoted by the Russian Defense Ministry.

The reconciliation center added that ceasefire agreements have been reached with representatives of two settlements in Syria’s Aleppo and Damascus provinces.

"In the past 24 hours, ceasefire agreements have been reached with representatives of two settlements in the provinces of Damascus and Aleppo. The number of settlements which have joined the reconciliation process increased to 131," the center said.

Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with government forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad fighting numerous opposition factions and extremist groups.

A US-Russia-brokered ceasefire agreement came into force across Syria on February 27. The deal does not apply to terrorist groups such as Islamic State (IS, also known as Daesh) and Jabhat al-Nusra (Nusra Front), both of which are outlawed in Russia and a range of other states.
