LONDON (Sputnik) — A resolution proposing sanctions against Russians suspected of rule of law violations has been submitted to the UK House of Commons, a source in the know told RIA Novosti on Friday.

The motion by a cross-party group of Commons lawmakers will call on the government to enforce travel bans and asset freezes on Russians that have been sanctioned by US authorities, the source from the team of a UK lawmaker in the parliament’s lower house said.

The document, dating April 11, has been registered in the Commons’ database, the source added.

The 2012 US Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act singled out Russian officials that Washington claimed were involved in the death in pre-trial detention of Sergei Magnitsky, a Russian lawyer who alleged official corruption at the highest levels of government.

Magnitsky, a managing partner of the Moscow law company Firestone Duncan, was detained in 2008 and accused of conspiracy and abatement for tax evasion by a group of individuals. Less than a year later, he died of heart failure while still in custody.
