Destroyed Monuments in Historic Palmyra Could Be Rebuilt – Archaeologist
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia and Germany will hold a meeting in mid-July on how to restore Syria’s ancient city of Palmyra after it was ravaged by Islamist militants, a Russian presidential representative said Friday.

The Roman-era ruins were recaptured in March by Syrian troops with air support from Russia. Islamists destroyed two of Palmyra's 2,000-year temples and the landmark Arch of Triumph.

"The St. Petersburg Forum will focus on how Russian and German archeologists and restoration artists can work together to restore the world heritage site," Mikhail Shvydkoi, the president's special representative for cultural cooperation, told reporters in Moscow.

The Petersburg Dialogue, an annual Russian-German public forum, is scheduled for July 14-15. Shvydkoi hopes it will result in a cooperation roadmap.

Palmyra is one of UNESCO’s six World Heritage sites in Syria. The UN culture agency sent its first mission to the city in April to assess the damage and is holding an expert meeting in Berlin with Syrian historians to agree on a way forward.
