Russia's deputy defense minister emphasized the need for positive pressure on Pyongyang and called for refraining from provocative actions amid North Korea's nuclear ambitions.

SINGAPORE (Sputnik) — Russia calls for "positive pressure" on North Korea in the issues of nuclear, as well as of missile proliferation, Russia’s Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov said Sunday.

"There is just one option for us — to continue positive, positive, I would like to emphasize, pressure on government of North Korea to rethink about the behavior regarding the missile and nuclear proliferation," Antonov said at the "IISS Shangri-La Dialogue" Asia Security Summit in Singapore, adding that Moscow would not recognize Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions.

He also said that other countries should refrain from provocative and "emotional" actions near the borders of North Korea, because it could worsen the situation in the region.

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula escalated after North Korea successfully carried out a hydrogen bomb test in early January and put a satellite into orbit a month later, violating UN Security Council resolutions and triggering condemnation from the international community.
