The American e-commerce giant Amazon faced the full wrath of Indian social media users for allowing vendors to sell doormats containing images of Hindu Gods.

The US company was slammed on social media after selling doormats and other products with religious figures. The hashtag #BoycottAmazon continued to trend on both Facebook and Twitter for days.

The products were initially spotted by users but eventually snowballed into a PR nightmare for Amazon.

Almost all the products were sold by retailer “Rock Bull,” but Amazon ended up paying the costly price with several users reporting that they would uninstall the Amazon app from their smartphones.

Hindus were not the only ones offended. Doormats with images of the Quran and Jesus Christ were also sold, infuriating Muslims and Christians equally.

The company has also issued apologetic statements to users expressing regret for having offended their religious feelings.

The backlash would prove costly for Amazon as the website is locked in a tight e-commerce race with two other Indian companies, Flipkart and Snapdeal. Amazon will have to have some pretty good tricks up its sleeve to come back strongly after this scandal.

Here is a list of social media posts by Indian users heaping scorn at Amazon.
