MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) — The elections were held in 12 of Mexico’s 32 states on Sunday. According to the early results, President Enrique Pena Nieto's Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) may only win in five states.
In Tamaulipas, the candidate from the conservative National Action Party (PAN) is expected to assume office with 49.9 percent of votes, while in Veracruz, the candidate from the Movement of National Regeneration (MORENA) is projected to win with 33.4 percent of votes, the early results showed.
If the opposition wins in Tamaulipas and Veracruz, it will be the first defeat of the ruling party in these states since 1929, when the PRI was established. Tamaulipas and Veracruz usually give the most votes to the PRI in presidential elections.
