MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier in the week, Clinton succeeded to secure necessary number of delegates, including both pledged ones and superdelegates, to win her party's presidential nomination. According to the statement, following the news, Obama on Tuesday called both Clinton and her Democratic rival Sen. Bernie Sanders.
"The President congratulated Secretary Clinton for securing the delegates necessary to clinch the Democratic Nomination for President. Her historic campaign inspired millions and is an extension of her lifelong fight for middle-class families and children," the White House said in a statement, as quoted by the CNBC broadcaster.
Obama also reportedly thanked Sanders for "energizing millions of Americans with his commitment to issues like fighting economic inequality and special interests' influence on our politics." The president is set to meet with the senator on Thursday to discuss "significant issues at stake in this election that matter most to America's working families."
