ANKARA (Sputnik) — On June 2, German legislators voted in favor of recognizing mass killings of ethnic Armenians by the Ottoman authorities in World War I era as genocide, with just one ballot cast against the resolution.
"We do not recognize the resolution of the German parliament which is an example of political irresponsibility…. We expect the German government to distance itself from the resolution passed by the German parliament," Kalin said adding that the German legislators sent a bad message to three million Turks living in Germany.
Up to 1.2 million Armenians were slaughtered or starved to death by the Ottomans during and after World War I, according to various estimations. The empire’s policy of ethnic violence has been recognized by many European countries and Russia as genocide. Ankara maintains that Turkish nationals were also victimized.
